Basic Garage Door Cable Repair Steps:
1. Disconnect the garage door opener and unplug power to prevent accidental operation.
2. Manually open the garage door and secure it in place using vise grips on the tracks.
3. Carefully loosen tension on the shaft just enough to remove the damaged cable.
⚠️ Be extremely careful — over-rotating the shaft can cause the opposite cable to come off.
4. Remove the old cable from the bottom fixture and unwind it from the cable drum.
5. Install the new garage door cable by feeding it into the drum slot and wrapping it correctly:
• Cable travels DOWN on the outside
• Cable travels UP on the inside
6. Reattach the cable loop to the bottom bracket and carefully tension the cable.
7. Remove vice grip clamps and slowly lower the garage door and check for proper balance and alignment.
8. Adjust shaft tension carefully if one side appears uneven.
📏 Standard 7-foot garage doors typically use an 8’6” garage door cable.
